  • Uncle Sam wants to give you free Wi-Fi … with a catch

My dad always taught me to beware of whatever Uncle Sam gives you. But it usually costs you something – whether in tax dollars or in freedom. So, when FCC Chairman Kevin Martin announced a plan to offer free wireless Internet to the masses, I had to ask … what’s the catch? Well, the catch is that the Internet would be free, but also filtered, and that means no naughty bits … er … bytes.

The proposal would make the Internet porn free for all those going on the wireless government doll with Uncle Sam deciding what’s obscene and what isn’t. As part of the upcoming auction to sell off access rights to analog TV airwaves, the FCC would require the winning bid to include a plan to devote 25% of the airwaves for a free Internet service. The bidder would be free to devote 75% of the bandwidth to high speed, paid internet access with the proviso that the remaining bandwidth would go towards a slower, free service that would also filter out “pornography and other material not suitable for children.”

The proposal, which most experts believe isn’t policeable, is loosely based on similar proposals in Australia and have drawn criticism from all sides as wireless carriers object to a mandatory competitor with free access, while free speech advocates object to an overreaching government deciding what the citizenry can and cannot consider as offensive. Martin has stated that the option of adults choosing to opt-out of the filter and have full Internet access. But that really isn’t the issue. With the FCC deciding what is and isn’t offensive, they have to observe and analyze traffic. And that could amount to a massive invasion of privacy.

Then again, privacy can have its price and can simply opt to continue paying for their Internet access and avoid it altogether.

  • NEC has new displays for medical professionals

NEC Display Solutions is a name that’s highly respected when it comes to commercial LCD displays and projectors, and the company has just announced that it will make available its line of MultiSync MD Series of high-brightness, color and grayscale flat-panel monitors. These monitors were specially designed for medical imaging applications, including radiology and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). Some of the new MultiSync MD Series models comprise of the 21″, 2-megapixel MD212MC and the 21″, 3-megapixel MD213MC color displays. Both of them will feature front sensors, while the 21″, 3-megapixel MD213MG display with front sensor is a grayscale model.

The MD212MC and MD213MC color displays follow in the footsteps of the highly successful line of medical grayscales from NEC, and join the 30-inch, 4-megapixel MD304MC color display with backlight sensor announced earlier this year. The MD212MC, MD213MC, MD213MG and MD304MC displays can be seen at the 2008 Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) Annual Meeting and Conference (Booth No. 4270) from November 30 through December 5 at McCormick Place in Chicago. NEC’s new UA-SFT LCD module technology offers high brightness without compromising contrast or viewing angles, making the image quality outstanding for color or grayscale images. Select units include built-in front sensors for stability, as well as remote assurance of DICOM conformance.

Features of these new displays include :-

    • DICOM calibration and the X-Light Pro sensor system for maintaining a consistent image
    • 12-bit lookup table (LUT) for detailed images and grayscale
    • ColorComp, which reduces LCD uniformity errors and compensates for differences in color/grayscale and luminance
    • Front or backlight sensors
    • Full medical certifications
    • 5-year limited warranty with overnight exchange service

Both the MD212MC and MD213MC displays will begin shipping from this month onwards, retailing for $3,899 and $4,999, respectively. As for the MD213MG display, that will be made available next month, retailing for $4,699. Those who are interested in the MD304MC display can pick it up now for a dollar shy of $4,000.

  • Nikon D3x launched

Nikon is at the top of its game, this time round having launched the D3X FX-format digital SLR camera that comes with a whopping 24.5-megapixel resolution to capture everything you see in great detail sans noise. This means the D3X is able to offer professional photographers the chance to bring home commercial-quality image performance in the versatile D-SLR form factor that they’re used to. Needless to say, the Nikon D3X is the flagship digital camera from the company, and you won’t find anything better coming out from them at least for a while.

Inside the D3X, one will find that the heart of the D3X is its FX-format, 24.5-megapixel (6048 x 4032) CMOS sensor that offers extreme resolution, dynamic range, color depth, detail and sharpness that will satisfy even the most demanding clients. It can be used to create catalogs, magazine covers, billboards or gallery prints without too much hassle, where its large 5.49-micron pixel size and high signal to noise ratio is able to churn out vibrant images with breathtaking image fidelity while keeping lost highlights and shadows to a minimum, resulting in smoother tone reproduction with minimized noise. You are able to capture up to five frames-per-second (fps) in 14-bit file format, which translates to approximately 138MB per image. Better bust the bank account to purchase a bunch of memory cards for use with the D3X as you’ll run out of them pretty fast.

The D3X currently works fine with Nikon’s Creative Lighting System (CLS) that offers photographers a mobile lighting solution which is easy to manage. In addition, you can hook it up to Nikon’s GP-1 GPS receiver to gather information such as latitude, longitude, altitude and date of shooting for those who love archiving stuff. When tethered via USB, you are able to send images to a computer directly. The Nikon D3X will be out this month, retailing for a whopping $7,999.95.

  • Ycam Wi-Fi Baby Monitor

Even though I have children of my own, I haven’t really invested in a baby monitor. I really ought to, because they have some fancy ones with video cameras now for a low price. When I was a baby, the only baby monitors with video cameras were several hundred dollars each.

The Ycam Wi-Fi Baby monitor is certainly a whole lot cheaper, as it uses the inexpensive video technology that is common on webcams everywhere. The Ycam is designed to hook up with the user’s own Wi-Fi network, and it is able to take high quality video with sound. It can shoot in 30fps with 640 x 480 pixel resolution.

The Ycam has infrared night vision, so you can see your little babies even in the dark. Another special feature is the motion detection system that will alert you with email. There is also an option for MPEG-4 compression for reduced bandwith and storage. It is possible to view from many devices including laptops, even the iPhone.

The WiFi connectivity makes it possible for multiple client users. So now the relatives can see the little baby in the crib from anywhere, provided they have the password protection. Not to mention all the parents who can view their children online while they are away.

You should be able to get the Ycam Wi-Fi Baby Monitor on the BabyMonitorsDirect website for about £149.99.

  • Holocube 3-D: Holograms available in box-form

Some of you may remember when Coolest Gadgets covered CNN’s supposed “hologram” of will.i.am covering the American election last month. Of course, that hologram was nothing more than special effects, but here is an article about the real deal.

I’m not talking about those tiny holograms on your credit cards or certain magazine covers, and I’m not talking about the ones as cool as Princess Leia’s distress call in the original Star Wars. The holographic technology that I am writing about now is the Holocube 3D, somewhere in the middle of these two advancements.

The Holocube 3D is a box that has a genuine hologram inside. It comes in three sizes of 10, 15, and 17 inches, and has a 40GB worth of hard drive for authentic holographic video footage.

Of course, I’m not sure if 40GB is enough to hold the memory required for a hologram. I’m also not certain where you will get the hologram in the first place. Do you need to purchase the hologram separate from the Holocube? If so, then you will have to go through the complex process of making a hologram.

If the hologram is sold separately, then this cube may be even more expensive than the current tag of $9,000. That might be a small price to pay for some unique décor.

  • The Star Trek Phaser and Communicator Set

If you have a Star Trek fan you’re shopping for this Christmas, Think Geek has you covered.  They are now selling a Star Trek Phaser and Communicator Set.  Which would be especially great for the fans that enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters.  Just try not to act out the roles in front of any potential partners that are not Star Trek fans.  You might be a little more safe if they’re at least Star Wars fans, but you’re still going to be pushing it.

The phaser has four power settings, with each one there are progressively aggressive sounds as well as lights.  It also includes a sight that you can flip up and has a switch to turn off the lights.  The communicator pulls sounds straight from the TV show, which include not only sound effects but famous phrases as well.  You can pick up them both on Think Geek for $39.99.  Shockingly though for once the batteries are actually included.

  • Fujitsu Laptop4Life Program

If you are tired of your current laptop becoming obsolete after a few years, then it is time you joined the Laptop4Life program. This program, created by Fujitsu, allows the user to get a new laptop free every three years.

In order to qualify for this three-year program, a user will have to do three things:

    1) Save the receipt, which most people do out of caution anyway. Maybe a Laptop4Life member should just keep it in their wallet or purse.
    2) A user will also need to keep the laptop in good condition, presumably so it can be recycled.
    3) Purchase a 3 year extended warranty, but I don’t have a price for this.

Beyond that, a user can have his or her a new laptop that is the same value as the originally one he or she purchased, with a ten percent adjustment for inflation.

This program comes in handy for getting new software or other hardware, but they need to be upgradeable Fujitsu parts. So now you can set the purchase of your new laptop in sync with the new version of Windows!

I have to admit Fujitsu is pretty generous to be giving out such an offer. I have heard that a user can keep this program up until the day he or she dies, but cannot pass it on to their progeny.

  • The Belkin SportCommand controls iPod with giant remote

This Belkin SportCommand adds a slightly different twist to the usual items built to deal with your iPod while you’re working out.  Although it appears like the iPod should just be within that pouch, it’s not.  Actually the iPod can be put into an inner coat pocket or anywhere else you might want to put it.  That giant arm band isn’t there to protect your iPod like you might have guessed.  It’s actually a giant remote control.

The remote control is designed for colder days when your hands are covered in gloves and you want to skip a song or pause it.  You just attach the other piece to your iPod and it works wirelessly.  The wireless will work through walls and of course jackets and backpacks as well.  It’s water-resistant and has up to a 50ft range.  The only down side would be finding a spot to put your iPod that you’re comfortable with.  You can pick it up on Amazon for around $70.

Most men will find that a suitable timepiece on their wrist greatly enhances their look, which is why you will find a wide range of various timepieces from different manufacturers to cater to a host of personalities. With the Polimaster Wrist Gamma Indicator watch, you can be sure that the resident nerd will appreciate this gift since it not only boasts Swiss-made quartz clock movement (that’s secondary), it features the ability to monitor radiation levels of both the wearer and surrounding environment. Who knows, you could be living with an alien masquerading as your wife all this while without you realizing it. Would you fork out $370 for such a watch? I suppose if you’re living near a nuclear plant this would come in handy…

  • Happy Birthday Gaj-It

I’d like to wish a happy second birthday to fellow gadget blog Gaj-It, they’ve been regular contributors and winners of our Coolest Gadget of the week contest so they certainly know cool stuff when they find it.

To celebrate Gaj-It has launched a new weekly newsletter and are giving away various prizes, including Satzuma Lottoball, R/C Ducati, Star Wars Torch Keyrings. Good luck.

  • The Pirate Computer Mouse

It’s not uncommon to see a shiny mouse, decked out with some overly feminine design.  However, there is rarely a mouse seen that uses decals that are just cool as opposed to pretty.  Well this pirate mouse will help you on your way to any devious planning.  The seemingly evil mouse would also be a great tool to pwn noobs and leave angry comments on YouTube or your blog of choice.

Sadly, this mouse doesn’t look quite as menacing as one would hope for with a skulls and crossbones mouse.  Between the teeth and the cartoonish eyes, it doesn’t look like it’d strike the fear into anyone.  Actually, your Great Grandmother might even call it cute, which is never a good sign.  Luckily though this mouse does have one perk, it is actually optical.  The mouse is also compatible with not only Windows, but Mac OS X and Linux as well. You can pick up the USB mouse on BBMoon for $27 a piece.

  • The Start Your Engines Alarm Clock

If your love of cars isn’t being expressed quite enough in your current home décor, you might check out this alarm.  There have been other alarms similar to this one, but luckily this one is a little cheaper than the others I’ve seen.  If you’re on the lookout for a gift for a guy impossible to buy for and he has a love for cars this would be an easy gift to pick up.  I’m sure he’d get a kick out of waking up to the sound of a high-powered V8 engine.

Although frankly I’m not sure how easy it would be to wake up to the sound of an engine.  It’s not that it couldn’t possibly be loud enough.  The issue more is if you live in the city, the sound of your alarm might blend into the traffic noise you’re used to hearing outdoors.  Luckily the engine noise will grow in pitch and intensity until you turn it off.  The clock also includes an AM/FM radio and can be powered by either the AC adapter or AA batteries.  You can purchase it for $29.95 on Hammacher Schlemmer.
